SEL Workshops
Skills to Create and Foster Connection:
Social Awareness and Relationships Skills
Learning is a relational and social process that takes place between teacher and student and between students. As such, the foundation of any learning experience relies on the building of positive and healthy relationships- which do not “just” happen. Students need to be taught how to clearly articulate their thoughts and how to listen and negotiate differences of opinions, while also understanding how their actions affect others.
This session will provide tools that can be used to teach the social and emotional competencies of social awareness and relationship skills and will provide examples of how these skills can be integrated into Jewish curricula.
This 90 minute interactive workshop includes SEL tools and strategies that can be integrated into daily schedules and curricula.
SEL and the Teaching Jewish Values
Whereas goals of specific Jewish content knowledge are forever being debated and changed among educators, the Jewish value “of being a mensch” has been one of the few constants that educators and parents alike have always agreed on. To achieve this, it is not enough to “just teach about” Jewish values; rather, it is necessary to also focus on the growth and development of the social and emotional skills of our students so these values can be lived. These skills can be taught when social emotional learning (SEL) is integrated into the curriculum. This workshop will explore and demonstrate how to do just that!
This is a 90 minute interactive workshop.
SESL and Spirituality
As Jewish educators we have the unique opportunity to address the inner lives of our students within a Jewish context. Perhaps more importantly, if we want to teach the whole person, we need to nourish our learners' hearts, minds, and souls. Social and emotional skills can help learners of all ages find meaning and purpose while also understanding the various ways spirituality can manifest itself in their lives.
This 60-90 minute workshop will identify the social and emotional skills that can be taught to help learners connect to their own personal definition of spirituality.
SEL and Leadership
As leaders, we may have different goals for our institutions, but we all aspire to create a positive learning and working culture and climate. From the administration level to board members, leaders must be able to build his or her own skills, as well as those of their teammates and staff. These skills can be described as social-emotional competencies. Social and emotional learning refers to acquiring the skills and necessary life habits to help an individual handle oneself and work with others successfully in a variety of relationships. Rooted in the management of feelings and emotions, SEL is a practice that can lead the way to collaboration, improved relationships and productivity, and professional achievement.
This is a 60-90 min workshop.
SEL and the Power of Reflection
The last two years have tested our ability to be flexible, resilient, and creative in ways we never could have imagined.
Reflection can be a powerful tool that gives us an opportunity to pause amid the constant frenetic pace of change and challenges, to create new meaning and understanding of those experiences, and to celebrate all that we have done and accomplished.
We will take time in this 90 minute workshop to look back at this year and reflect, share, and celebrate.
