SESL Purim Lessons
In this blog, you'll find texts, questions, and exercises designed to support the social, emotional, and spiritual growth of your learners while learning about the holiday of Purim.

Embracing Tu B’Shevat: A Celebration of Trees and Connection
Originally tied to agricultural practices, Tu B’Shevat has grown into what many call “Jewish Earth Day.” It’s a time to reflect on our connection to the environment and think about how we care for the world we share.

Teaching Kindness: A Necessity in Today’s World
In a world increasingly filled with hate and unkindness, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. From disparaging rhetoric from our leaders to the alarming resurgence of anti-Semitism, our communities often reflect a harsh reality. While we may not have control over these external events, we do have the power to choose how we respond and how we treat those around us.

Anxious, Stressed, Sad - Building an emotional vocabulary matters!
Words matter. Building an emotional vocabulary and articulating those emotions can have a profound effect on how we interpret, conceptualize, and understand ourselves and our world.

YATS
I recently learned a new word from my younger daughter’s boyfriend- or rather an acronym- YATS. It means Yelling At the TV Screen. He was using it in reference to watching football and how often people yell at the players, coaches, and referees. I have to admit that I am guilty of this. Not necessarily when watching sporting events, but certainly when I hear offensive comments made by political leaders. I even do this when I read the paper (much to my husband’s chagrin).

Don’t Be Sad……
“Don’t be sad. Don’t be blue. There is something everyone can do!”
This is from the children’s story, Pete the Cat and the New Guy. In the story, Pete befriends Gus, a platypus, who is still trying to figure out what he does well. Each day, Gus meets someone new and learns about their unique talent and ability.

Creating Brave Work Environments
I always enjoy teaching and leading workshops about SESL. Each experience is different because the participants are- that's part of what makes it interesting and exciting. Recently while facilitating a workshop, things definitely got interesting…

Baseball and SEL
Written on a wall in Angel’s Stadium is the Little League Pledge, which includes the following two lines: “I will play fair and strive to win. But win or lose I will always do my best. Besides athletic performance, does "doing one's best" also include managing their anger? Are players taught social and emotional skills like self awareness and management?

You Want to Arm Me With What??
The discussion about arming teachers with guns to increase the safety of our schools has once again being proposed in light of the horrific events in Uvalde. Instead of arming us with guns, how about:
Arm all teachers with the resources they need.

How Are You Feeling?
We all know what it feels like when someone takes the time to check in on us - to ask how we are doing and to really listen to the answer. Daily check-in’s with our students provide the opportunity to make them feel seen and heard.
